HomeDish is a project of Refugee Women Rising that celebrates the homeland food and culture of immigrant and refugee women that transcends language and cultural perceptions. Its innovation marries native foods with adopted country leadership -- educating and empowering refugee women to strengthen their personal and professional skills. These women might have been home cooks or even chefs in their native countries, but due to language barriers or family responsibilities, have not yet had the opportunity to thrive in America.

Over time and meals, women spoke openly of the darker side of being resettled: becoming a refugee isn’t a choice, but a painful and lonely experience. While the women are grateful for resettlement, trying to adjust to a foreign language, climate, and lifestyle is challenging. Yet traditional foods that women prepared with other women remained a constant comfort in a foreign land. HomeDish recognized both the loneliness and gifts of these vulnerable women and knew value-added programming could make a difference. Now that our dinner program is well-established, we are committed to taking the next steps. Our creative and culturally-sensitive approach is unique and will reach dozens of immigrant and refugee women and hundreds of community members.
