Our History

Nebraska has welcomed refugees since 1983. Refugees from over 30 countries have resettled through local resettlement agencies in cooperation with the United Nations.

Refugee Women Rising (RWR) is an Omaha-based, refugee service provider that works to fill gaps refugee women and their families deem necessary. Our work touches refugee women at various life stages after resettlement — whether they are newly arrived or a longtime resident seeking advancement.

Started as a grassroots collective of community members (first known as Benson Area Refugee Task Force) we began by helping refugees with immediate unmet needs, including household and clothing donations and English as a Second Language classes. We quickly recognized we needed to address the lack of access, transportation, ongoing language skills, social connection, and opportunity that refugee women face as they integrate into our community. In 2018, we formalized our approach and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The creation of our HomeDish dinner project was the cornerstone of our outreach. It was based on mutually beneficial relationship-building between refugee cooks and guests through conversation and food. Refugee cooks earned income and learned practical skills; guests engaged in conversation with cooks over a shared meal, breaking cultural stereotypes.

Our History

Our History

Like many nonprofits, the COVID-19 pandemic deeply impacted RWR’s work. We held listening sessions to understand the real needs of refugee women in our community, and co-developed our programs with the women we collaborate with—bringing genuine value to our mission of collaborating with women in culturally sensitive ways to further themselves personally and professionally. In summer 2021, Refugee Women Rising opened its first office on the grounds of Joslyn Castle and Gardens.

We're proud to offer our free, comprehensive driving education, culinary training, and wellness programs to refugee and immigrant women—and we're even prouder to see refugee and immigrant women grow personally and professionally. We couldn't have made it without the generous support of countless supporters, friends, and funders. From our grassroots to a formalized nonprofit, we're reminded that we're always stronger when we work together—we are testament to the power of community.

We invite you to be part of it.
